Fort Scott, with a population of just 7,615 is exactly that. Situated in Bourbon County, less than 90 minutes south of Kansas City, this quaint city exudes an undeniable charm and boasts a rich historical heritage. Speaking of history, this Kansas gem boasts an array of attractions ranging from the iconic 1842 Fort Scott National Historic Site to the elegant brick streets and stately mansions. Yet, beyond its historical landmarks, Fort Scott beckons to the contemporary traveler with enticing offerings such as eclectic boutiques, vibrant art galleries, and incredible museums.

Guarding the American frontier during the mid-19th century, it safeguarded settlers and facilitated the westward expansion. Today, visitors can immerse themselves in its rich history, exploring meticulously preserved buildings and engaging with exhibits and military reenactments that bring the era to life.

Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes – Once again, Fort Scott continues to surprise us in the best way, and the Lowell Milken Center is a shining example of why. Created by renowned artist Cbabi Bayoc, this mural pays tribute to first men of color to organize and fight for their own freedom and the freedom of all African Americans during the U.S. Civil War.

Be The LightEmbark on a journey through décor and unique home furnishings with character. As one of the newer boutiques in Fort Scott’s historic downtown, it’s a wonderland of enchanting and festive offerings for all occasions and seasons.

Laree + Co – This was my favorite shop. I loved the whimsical offerings of Laree + Co, a charming baby and children’s store with a heartwarming mission. With a portion of its profits dedicated to the Lillian Rose Foundation, this boutique not only offers adorable finds but also supports a worthy cause.

Fort Scott, Kansas, has truly earned its place on every Midwest traveler’s bucket list. With its captivating blend of rich history, dynamic arts scene, and culinary treasures, this quaint city exceeds all expectations, leaving an enduring impression as a charming destination ripe for exploration.
