The Perfect Trip to New Glarus, Wisconsin

Mariah Haberman New Glarus

New Glarus may be known as “America’s Little Switzerland” but this charming village in the hills is about as Wisconsin as they come. And that fact in and of itself probably explains why it has long been one of my all-time favorite Wisconsin destinations. There’s just so much to love here.

For starters, let’s talk about the location. New Glarus is tucked away in the rolling hills of Green County. The town of 2,172 is perhaps most famous for its chalet-style architecture and Swiss influence everywheeere. Oh, and let’s not forget, it’s also home to that one brewery that makes beers with funny names. How about a standing ovation for the makers of Spotted Cow?! 👏

I’ve made more than a few trips to this south-central Wisconsin hot spot and the verdict is in: IT’S SWISS PERFECTION. So, my hope is that by now I’ve got you on the New Glarus train. Climb aboard, my friends: Here are my absolute favorite things to do and places to experience in Swiss Town, USA!

Where to Stay

Chalet Landhaus Inn in New Glarus, Wisconsin
Located off Highway 69, the Swiss-style Chalet Landhaus Inn is a New Glarus staple.

Opening its doors for the first time back in 1980, the Chalet Landhaus Inn is “where traditional Swiss hospitality and charm welcome you all year round.” The old-world feel of the Chalet Landhaus might just have you believing the Alps are right outside your window.

Where to Play

Need a little R&R with Mother Nature herself? May I suggest New Glarus Woods State Park where you can embark on the 23-mile-long Sugar River Bike Trail or load up the camping gear for a night under the stars.

Where to Wine

The real pinnacle of my time in New Glarus comes courtesy of Bailey’s Run Vineyard just outside of town. Now…to know me is to know that I’m somewhat of a connoisseur in the world of Wisconsin wineries. So you can bet the second I caught wind of a new(ish) winery in New Glarus (Bailey’s Run officially opened in May 2018), my investigation skills kicked into overdrive.

Bailey’s Run Vineyard, located atop a ridge a couple minutes west of New Glarus, is open year-round.

This place ticks all the boxes for me. Great wine? For sure. Amazing views? Without a doubt. Fun staff, unique events and a gorgeous venue? Check. Check. Check. A haven of a destination for your girlfriend’s getaway or romantic retreat, Bailey’s can be whatever you want it to be: a relaxing evening on the patio or a high-energy night of fun with your best pals.

Bailey’s Run Vineyard is owned by Todd & Janet Kuehl — and I’ve gotta throw some credit to the winery’s namesake, an adorable goldendoodle who at any given time can be found roaming the patio and posing for pics in exchange for a treat here and there.

The winery’s furry, lovable, snack-loving mascot: Bailey!

The wines are hand-harvested through traditional basket press production and are truly some of the best I’ve tasted in Wisconsin. Try a raspberry-infused semi-sweet wine called “Lust,” a sweet red with a foreshadowing name, “Loopy” and my personal favorite, a pink rosé dubbed Knuddelbar—pronounced: “Ca-noodle-bar”.

Expect a fun, lively atmosphere under the lights at Bailey’s Run Vineyard in New Glarus.

Chat with the friendliest staff ever, order some cheese and chocolate for the ultimate wine pairing and consider timing your trip to Bailey’s around Wine-o Bingo, “Namaste’ & Rose,’ or one of the many live music shows. The positive vibes at Bailey’s Run are on full display—this is where wine goes to have fun!

My sister and I enjoyed our fair share of appetizers and desserts with our wine.

Where to Dine

When in Rome (err, New Glarus), a meal at Glarner Stube, which translates to “The Living Room of New Glarus” is a no-brainer—this Swiss-German restaurant is famous for its fondue. But what if you’re craving casual dining with a flair of Mexican – set to the backdrop of a gorgeous Victorian home? Well, miracles do exist: Kristi’s Restaurant on the corner of 2nd St. and 5th Ave. is a gem of a spot. Try the Tostada Nachos or Chori Pollo Chicken Sandwich!

Where to Shop

Confession: My debit card is like a magnet to unique boutiques with a solid selection of high-quality, one-of-a-kind items. Ka-ching: Hutch + Hide in downtown New Glarus is one of my faves. Owned and managed by the Hutchison family, you’ll find vintage accessories, dreamy home decor and one thoroughly delightful baby section.

Less than a block up from Hutch + Hide is Rusty Raven, an eclectic store that somehow manages to toe the line between rustic roots and urban chic. In true Wisconsin form, you’re encouraged to “sip & shop.” Yes, here you can grab a local brew in their taproom and proceed to browse American-made, premium goods. #onlyinwisconsin

Rusty Raven: Where the goods are as eclectic as the name itself!

New Glarus…you brought a smile to my face all weekend long. And not just because the wine was flowin’.
