Only in the Midwest: 5 Bucket List Travel Destinations

Too often overlooked by travelers, the Midwest is full of hidden gems and bucket list destinations. From vibrant cities to awe-inspiring natural wonders, the Midwest has something for everyone. Here are five of my top bucket list travel destinations in the Midwest:

1. Mackinac Island, Michigan

Located in Lake Huron between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas, Mackinac Island is a charming destination that will transport you back in time. With no cars allowed on the island, visitors get around by bike or horse-drawn carriage. You can explore historic Fort Mackinac, visit the famous Grand Hotel, or relax on one of the island’s many beaches.

2. The Badlands, South Dakota

The Badlands National Park is one of the most unique landscapes in the U.S. The layered rock formations and jagged peaks create a rugged and surreal environment that is unlike anything else in the Midwest. You can hike through the park’s trails, spot bison and bighorn sheep, and take in stunning views of the park’s canyons and valleys.

3. Chicago, Illinois

As the third largest city in the U.S., Chicago is a bucket list destination for many travelers. With world-renowned architecture, a thriving food scene, and endless cultural attractions, there is no shortage of things to do in the Windy City. Popular attractions include the Willis Tower Skydeck, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the famous Navy Pier.

4. Door County, Wisconsin

Located on a narrow peninsula in Lake Michigan, Door County is a charming, family-friendly destination that’s perfect for a summer vacation–or a couples’ getaway. With miles of coastline, charming small towns, and stunning natural beauty, Door County is a great place to relax and unwind. You can go kayaking, hiking, or take a scenic drive along the peninsula’s winding roads.

5. The Ozarks, Missouri

The Ozarks are a mountain range that spans across several states in the Midwest, including Missouri. With lush forests, clear rivers, and stunning rock formations, the Ozarks are a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. You can go hiking, fishing, or take a scenic drive along the Ozark National Scenic Riverways.

The Midwest is a region full of unique travel destinations that are sure to leave a lasting impression. Whether you’re looking for natural beauty, vibrant cities, or charming small towns, the Midwest has something for everyone. Be sure to add these bucket list destinations to your travel list and experience the best that the region has to offer.
