Let’s talk about Baraboo, Wisconsin.
Chances are you’ve discovered the allure of Devil’s Lake State Park, the magic of Circus World and maybe even the awe of Baraboo’s Big Top Parade.
But have you taken in one of Wisconsin’s best views from a gorgeous bed and breakfast? Have you ridden a historic train through the Driftless Area? What about the Sauk County lavender fields–have you discovered those fields of purple?
I absolutely love Baraboo–I always have. I love Baraboo for both its iconic attractions, but I’m equally in awe of its off-the-beaten-path experiences. In fact, that’s what I want to dive into today.
Join me as I explore six unique experiences in Baraboo, Wisconsin:
1. Book a stay at the Inn at Wawanissee Point.
Wawanissee (pronounced wah-wah-NEE-see) is the Native American Ho-Chunk word for beauty. And when you arrive at the Inn at Wawanissee Point (E13609 Tower Road, Baraboo) you’ll see the name fits this bed & breakfast perfectly.
Situated atop a ridge in the scenic Baraboo Bluffs, this rustic-chic mansion offers an unparalleled experience, with a mesmerizing 36-mile vista that stretches across the Lake Wisconsin valley and beyond. Immerse yourself in the serenity of nature, enjoy luxurious accommodations, and wake up to a gourmet breakfast prepared with locally sourced ingredients. Relax on the expansive deck, unwind in the hot tub, and venture out on the trails for birding, snowshoeing or just a little daydreaming…
2. Take a train ride via the Mid-Continent Railway Museum.
All Aboard!
Step back in time at the Mid-Continent Railway Museum (E8948 Museum Road
North Freedom), where the rich history of the railway era comes to life. Explore vintage train cars, admire meticulously restored locomotives, and learn about the significant role rail transportation played in shaping the Baraboo area’s past.
Embark on an unforgettable, family-friendly journey as you board a historic train for a scenic, seven-mile round-trip ride through the Baraboo Hills in rural Sauk County. You’ll experience the charm of a bygone era in meticulously restored steel coaches, originally built over a century ago. This was my first time partaking in anything like this–prepare to be transported back in time as you embark on this captivating railway adventure, reliving the golden age of train travel in the Baraboo Area!
3. Immerse yourself in a sensory escape at New Life Lavender & Cherry Farm.
Is there anything more majestic than fields of lavender? After visiting New Life Lavender & Cherry Farm (E10766 County Road W, Baraboo), I can confidently say the answer is no.
Located just outside of Baraboo, you’ll love taking a leisurely stroll through the vibrant fields of purple, breathing in that famously calming aroma, and discovering a cute shop full of all things lavender. From essential oils and soaps to culinary treats and handcrafted gifts, New Life Lavender offers a sensory escape in the heart of the Driftless Region.
My recommendation: Round up the family for New Life Lavender’s Farm to Table Wagon Tour, where you’ll explore the 40-acre property and see firsthand how sustainable agriculture works.
4. Get a tour–and enjoy dinner–at Driftless Glen Distillery.
Explore the Driftless Glen Distillery (30 Water St., Baraboo), where the flavors of the region are transformed into exceptional spirits! Driftless Glen is located right on the Baraboo River; I ended up hanging out on the patio for a couple of hours. It was so relaxing!
I highly recommend taking a tour of the distillery to learn about Driftless Glen’s story and sample their award-winning whiskey, vodka, and gin. This was my favorite part, hands down.
What to order: For an app, the pretzel bites. For your meal: the jambalaya. And you can’t go wrong with any of their cocktails but my favorite was the whiskey sour!
5. Explore the International Crane Foundation.
I’m embarrassed to admit this: I lived in Wisconsin most of my life and somehow never visited the International Crane Foundation (E11376 Shady Lane Rd, Baraboo) until now. Don’t make my mistake.
This one-of-a-kind conservation organization is dedicated to protecting endangered crane species worldwide. Walk through the beautiful grounds, observe graceful cranes in their natural habitats, and learn about the global efforts to preserve these majestic birds. The foundation’s informative exhibits and interactive displays cultivate a deeper understanding of the vital role of conservation in maintaining our planet’s biodiversity. Bring your camera, because these birds are total showstoppers.
6. Order lunch at a speakeasy at Relish Tray Bistro & Speakeasy.
Indulge in a unique dining experience at Relish Tray (106 4th Ave, Baraboo), a charming restaurant that doubles as a speakeasy and celebrates the art of fresh, unique food. I ordered the basil pink lemonade, chicken salad sandwich and a side of fresh fruit. My meal was both beautiful and delicious. From artisanal cheeses and cured meats to seasonal salads and creative small bites, Relish Tray offers a culinary journey that delights the taste buds and fosters a sense of community.
I’ll just say it: I think Baraboo is outrageously underrated. I love that many Midwesterners know of this city thanks to the fame of Devil’s Lake State Park, but I’d encourage you to stay a little longer in Baraboo.
I’d like to thank Ben Bromley and Discover Real Baraboo for inviting me to explore the uniqueness of your city. I am always amazed by the Baraboo area!
