Milwaukee is Algonquin for “The Good Land,” which makes perfect sense to me because it’s an absolutely beautiful city with some of the best people ever. Foodies and history buffs. Art lovers and beer snobs. There is literally something for everyone in this one-of-a-kind vibrant city located on the shores of Lake Michigan. Here is your new go-to guide for the very best of Milwaukee, Wisconsin:
1. Visit the Milwaukee Art Museum
If you’re already an art lover, I shouldn’t have to talk you into this one. If you’re not an art lover, here’s my pitch: Go to the Milwaukee Art Museum. You won’t regret it. The gorgeous museum is located on the beautiful Lake Michigan waterfront and is home to over 30,000 works of art, including pieces by artists like Georgia O’Keeffe and Pablo Picasso. The museum is famous for its iconic Quadracci Pavilion, a stunning structure designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The pavilion features a moving sunscreen that opens and closes like the wings of a bird.
2. Explore the Historic Third Ward & the Milwaukee Public Market
The Historic Third Ward is a trendy neighborhood located south of downtown Milwaukee. It is home to a vibrant arts scene, with galleries, boutiques, and restaurants lining its charming streets. Visitors can also explore the Milwaukee Public Market, a popular indoor market that features over twenty local vendors selling everything from fresh seafood and artisanal cheeses to craft beer and handcrafted chocolates.
3. Visit the Harley-Davidson Museum
Milwaukee is the birthplace of the iconic motorcycle brand, Harley-Davidson. The Harley-Davidson Museum is located in the Menomonee Valley and features exhibits that showcase the history and culture of this famous American brand. Visitors can see vintage motorcycles, artifacts, and memorabilia that tell the story of Harley-Davidson’s evolution over the years.
4. Take a tour at Lakefront Brewery
It ain’t called Brew City for nothin’. Milwaukee has a rich brewing tradition, and there are over 25 breweries that offer fun tours and tastings. Visitors can learn about the history of beer in Milwaukee and get a behind-the-scenes peek at how the good stuff is brewed. My favorite tour is probably Milwaukee’s most popular: Lakefront Brewery. I thought their tour was hilarious, but honestly it could’ve been the heavy pours they were handing me. I’m also a fan of Miller Brewery and Sprecher Brewery.
5. Visit the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory
The Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory, also known as “The Domes,” is a unique spot that features three large glass domes. Each dome houses a different ecosystem, including a desert oasis, a tropical rainforest, and a show dome that features seasonal displays. It’s a stunning spot in Milwaukee and you can visit any time of the year.
6. Enjoy the Outdoors
Milwaukee has plenty of outdoor spaces to enjoy, from the Milwaukee RiverWalk to the Milwaukee County Zoo. For some great local parks, I recommend Lakeshore State Park, Hart Park or Estabrook Park in Shorewood.
7. Indulge in Some Wisconsin Comfort Food
I’ll end with one of the most important tips because honestly, no trip to Wisconsin is complete without indulging in cheese curds, bratwurst, and the state’s iconic “Friday Night Fish Fry.” Some of the top spots to try these Wisconsin favorites include Kopp’s Frozen Custard, Usinger’s Famous Sausage, and The Brevarian Bierhaus.
Hidden Gems
Where to Stay
Milwaukee has always been one of my favorite Wisconsin cities to explore. It may be known to Wisconsinites but I think it’s a hidden gem to the rest of the world. Pack those bags and experience “The Good Land” for yourself!
