Hidden Gems: 10 Things to Do in Great Bend, Kansas

Great Bend, Kansas with Mariah Haberman

Since moving to Kansas in the spring of 2022, I’ve made it my mission to explore more of the Sunflower State. And because I’m particularly fond of discovering hidden gems in the Midwest, Great Bend immediately caught my attention. So Eric and I packed our weekend bags and made our way to central Kansas to this charming little city in the middle of the state! (Population: 14,580)

Great Bend may be a small town, but it is brimming with unique destinations and local businesses that capture the essence of Midwestern charm. From delightful coffee shops to an award-winning winery, this vibrant community packs a punch for out-of-towners and locals alike. Here are 10 of the best things to do in Great Bend:

Great Bend Coffee with Eric and Mariah White
  1. Enjoy a cup o’ jo at Great Bend Coffee.

We started our weekend getaway at Great Bend Coffee (2015 Lakin Avenue, Great Bend), a cozy little café that prides itself on serving exceptional brews. I ordered a chai and a bacon omelet. Eric ordered one of his favorite meals: waffles and strawberries. We also ordered a few desserts to go, which were fantastic.

This old-fashioned cafe is a wonderful spot to immerse yourself in that warm coffee shop atmosphere I love, while chatting with friendly locals, and indulging in delectable (and very affordable) pastries. Great Bend Coffee truly set the tone for a delightful weekend ahead!
Great Bend Zoo

2. Make your way to the Great Bend Zoo–it’s free!

The Great Bend Zoo (2123 Main St, Great Bend) is arguably the most popular attraction in Great Bend and for great reason:

Stroll through beautifully landscaped habitats and encounter fascinating wildlife from around the world, including a pair of (very vocal) lar gibbons, an African Lion and three grizzly bears! The zoo’s commitment to conservation extends even further with its Raptor Center, dedicated to safeguarding and preserving raptors through rehabilitation, education, research, and habitat conservation efforts.

For a fun family-friendly adventure, the Great Bend Zoo is an absolute must.

3. Tour the vineyards and sip on local wine at Rosewood Winery & Cellar.

Located nine miles west of Great Bend, Rosewood Winery (1171 SW 20 Road, Pawnee Rock) is the only winery in the country that is devoted to providing employment opportunities to people with developmental disabilities. In addition to having an incredible purpose, the winery offers visitors a serene countryside setting and a delightful selection of handcrafted wines. Take a tour of their vineyards, learn about the winemaking process, and, of course, indulge in a flight of your favorited reds and whites.

Tip: Don’t miss the chance to visit the Rosewood Wine Cellar in downtown Great Bend. Here, you’ll find a wonderful assortment of seasonal gifts, gourmet coffee, local cheeses, and, of course, plenty of award-winning Rosewood wines. (I recommend the blackberry cabernet!)

4. Head to the historic Pawnee Rock for a panoramic view of Barton County.

If you love history–and a fantastic view–I’ve got a place for you:

On our way back from the winery, we stopped by Pawnee Rock Historic Site–and I am so glad we did. Pawnee Rock was once a prominent landmark along the Santa Fe Trail, a major trade route during the 19th century. Pawnee Rock served as a vital landmark for early explorers, traders, and pioneers, offering a vantage point to survey the prairies and providing a place for rest and protection.

Today, the site offers visitors a glimpse into the past, with interpretive displays and exhibits that showcase the history and importance of Pawnee Rock in shaping the development of the American West. A shelter sits at the top of the rock; head up the spiral stairs to access the roof, which offers a magnificent 360-degree view of Barton County.

Yours Truly Gift and Flower Shoppe in Great Bend, Kansas

5. Do some local shopping in downtown Great Bend.

I think one of the best ways to get to know a town is to head to its downtown; specifically, its shops. Heart of Kansas and Miss Pretty Pickles (1214 Main St, Great Bend) are a pair of charming boutiques, where you’ll uncover a treasure trove of local products and handmade crafts. Browse through racks of one-of-a-kind clothing, explore Kansas-themed gifts, and discover delightful home decor items.

I also recommend making time for Yours Truly Gift & Flower Shoppe (2017 Lakin Ave, Great Bend) for gifts, flowers and super cute home goods. Oh, and because Eric’s a big fan of flea markets, we couldn’t resist popping in at The Wright Place (1913 Lakin Ave, Great Bend)!

The Odin Rodeo

5. Cheer on the local cowboys and cowgirls at the Odin Rodeo.

What better way to immerse yourself in the Western spirit than by spending your Saturday night at the rodeo? From bull riding to barrel racing, we spent five hours at the Odin Rodeo (888 NE 140 Rd, Odin) and loved every minute! The rodeo folks even invited me and my fellow travel writer friends (Backroads & Burgers) to take a spin out in the arena–and yes, I reprised my pageant wave!

Lunch from HandleBar & Grill in Great Bend, Kansas

7. Grab some lunch at HandleBar & Grill.

Eric and I also stopped in at HandleBar & Grill (807 10th St, Great Bend), a local favorite for delicious comfort food. Indulge in mouthwatering burgers, savory steaks, and hearty sandwiches served with a side of Midwestern hospitality. The HandleBar & Grill is the perfect spot to relax and refuel–and of course, this Wisconsin girl appreciated all the Harley-Davidson decor!

Eric White at Dry Lake Brewing in West Bend, Kansas

8. Quench your thirst at Dry Lake Brewing.

The locals all told us: You have to check out Dry Lake Brewing (1305 Main St, Great Bend). And they were right. This place did not disappoint. A craft brewery that combines passion, creativity, and the finest ingredients to produce exceptional beers, Dry Lake is an itinerary must when in town. Eric and I ordered a pair of flights–if you love seltzers, you should definitely order their seltzer flight!

9. Experience the iconic Odin Store.

Another fan favorite among locals, we knew our trip to Barton County, Kansas wouldn’t be complete without making our way to The Odin Store (890 NE 140 Rd, Odin). Part bar and grill, part gas station/convenience store, this beloved local institution has been serving the community for over a century. From household snacks to Coors on tap, the Odin Store is a perfect spot for those seeking a glimpse into the town’s heritage while stepping back in time.

Los Cabos Fajita House in Great Bend, Kansas

10. Enjoy lunch–and a margarita– at Los Cabos Fajita House.

For an authentic Mexican meal, I recommend making time on your itinerary for Los Cabos (619 Main Street, Great Bend). The restaurant, which has a sister location in Pratt, KS, is known for its fajitas of course (hence its namesake) as well as its superb service. I also highly recommend a margarita and/or pina colada!

Thank you, Great Bend, for allowing me the opportunity to dust off my cowgirl boots and explore your amazing town! A very special thank you to Christina Hayes and the Great Bend CVB staff for the amazing hospitality. Eric and I will definitely be back!
