When it comes to fast-food restaurants that serve delicious burgers and creamy custard, there are two iconic names here in the Midwest: Freddy’s and Culver’s. Both of these brands have a loyal following of customers who swear by their food.
As a Wisconsin native, I consider myself an expert in Culver’s, but as a newbie to the Kansas City area, Freddy’s has also won me over in a big way.
So which burger and custard spot comes out on top? Let’s break it down by category:
Burgers:
Both Freddy’s and Culver’s serve up some delicious burgers, but they have different styles. Freddy’s burgers are known for their thin patties that are crispy around the edges. Culver’s burgers, on the other hand, are thicker and juicier. While Freddy’s burgers are good, Culver’s burgers are just a step above.
Winner: Culver’s
Fries:
Alright, I’m going to ruffle some feathers here. This one, I admit, is very subjective on my part: Culver’s is known for their crinkle-cut fries that are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Freddy’s fries are thin and crispy. Personally, I love a thin, crispy fri so for me, Freddy’s edges Culver’s out.
Winner: Freddy’s
Cheese Curds:
In the spirit of controversial opinions:
Fried cheese curds are a Wisconsin staple. So, Culver’s should be the clear winner here. For me, the breading at Culver’s is a little off. I think Freddy’s cheese curds are a bit crispier and cheesier. In the most debatable sentence I may ever type: Freddy’s curds beat out Culver’s.

Custard:
When it comes to custard, both Freddy’s and Culver’s are excellent. Culver’s custard is made fresh daily, and it’s incredibly creamy and flavorful. I love Freddy’s custard, too, but it’s not quite as rich and creamy as Culver’s.
Winner: Culver’s
Overall Best Restaurant:
While Freddy’s is a solid choice for fries and curds, Culver’s takes things to the next level with their superior burgers and custard–and customer service as well. You can’t go wrong with either burger joint here in the Midwest, but I’m giving Culver’s the edge in the Midwest showdown!
