Fort Scott, with a population of just 7,615 is exactly that. Situated in Bourbon County, less than 90 minutes south of Kansas City, this quaint city exudes an undeniable charm and boasts a rich historical heritage. Speaking of history, this Kansas gem boasts an array of attractions ranging from the iconic 1842 Fort Scott National Historic Site to the elegant brick streets and stately mansions. Yet, beyond its historical landmarks, Fort Scott beckons to the contemporary traveler with enticing offerings such as eclectic boutiques, vibrant art galleries, and incredible museums.

Courtland Hotel & Spa – A relic of Fort Scott’s illustrious past, the Courtland Hotel & Spa stands as a testament to the city’s enduring legacy. Dating back to circa 1906, this historic establishment has preserved its bygone charm while integrating modern amenities. Located in the heart of Fort Scott’s Historic District, the Courtland Hotel offers a captivating glimpse into the city’s railroad era, with its elegant architecture and timeless ambiance. We loved meeting the hotel owner, Frank, who greeted Eric and I in the lobby and shared with us a bit of the hotel’s amazing history.

Fort Scott National Historic Site – The crown jewel of Fort Scott, the Fort Scott National Historic Site stands as a testament to the nation’s frontier heritage, established in 1842 as a vital military fortification. Guarding the American frontier during the mid-19th century, it safeguarded settlers and facilitated the westward expansion. Today, visitors can immerse themselves in its rich history, exploring meticulously preserved buildings and engaging with exhibits and military reenactments that bring the era to life.
Artificers Art Gallery & Studio –Stepping into the Artificers Art Gallery & Studio, I couldn’t help but marvel, “All this…in little Fort Scott, Kansas?” This is the kind of place you’d only expect to find in the big city, yet nestled within my favorite historic building, it adds a touch of urban flair to our charming town. From its vibrant gallery displays to its bustling workshop sessions led by world-class instructors, Artificers seamlessly merges artistry with community, offering a diverse array of classes for all ages and skill levels. Whether you’re a seasoned creator or just starting your artistic journey, prepare to be inspired and delighted. I sure was!
Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes – Once again, Fort Scott continues to surprise us in the best way, and the Lowell Milken Center is a shining example of why. It’s not just another museum; it’s a profound journey into the lives of unsung heroes whose remarkable acts of courage and compassion have left an indelible mark on history. Through pioneering project-based learning programs, the center empowers students to dive into the transformative power of empathy and resilience, drawing inspiration from luminaries such as civil rights activist Autherine Lucy and astronomer Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin. We left feeling truly inspired!
Rock Creek Lake Waterfalls – Lace up those hiking boots and prepare a picnic lunch for a visit to Rock Creek Lake, a tranquil sanctuary just minutes from downtown Fort Scott. With its picturesque waterfalls and lush surroundings, this idyllic retreat offers a perfect escape for nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers alike.
1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry – “Free to Serve” Mural – Commemorate the valor and sacrifice of the 1st Kansas Colored Infantry Regiment with a visit to this poignant mural, located right across the street from Fort Scott National Historic Site. Created by renowned artist Cbabi Bayoc, this mural pays tribute to first men of color to organize and fight for their own freedom and the freedom of all African Americans during the U.S. Civil War.
Gordon Parks Museum – Delve into the life and legacy of Gordon Parks, a visionary artist whose multifaceted talents left an indelible mark on the world. Situated on the Fort Scott Community College campus, the Gordon Parks Museum serves as a tribute to his remarkable achievements and as a testament to the enduring power of artistic expression.

Nu Grille – I’m all about a classic diner experience! Step back in time and relish the nostalgic charm of Nu Grille, a quintessential 1940s-style eatery nestled in downtown Fort Scott. Treat yourself to mouthwatering made-to-order burgers, crispy fries, and decadent milkshakes, all served with a generous side of small-town hospitality.
Crooner’s – For a taste of refined dining, treat yourself to an exquisite meal at Crooner’s in downtown Fort Scott. With its diverse menu featuring gourmet salads, fresh seafood, and succulent steaks, this upscale eatery redefines small-town dining with its upscale ambiance and delectable cuisine.

Angie Dawn’s – Unleash your inner fashionista at Angie Dawn’s, where chic and stylish looks await. Elevate your “OOTD” with sophisticated ensembles and trendy accessories.
Bids & Dibs – Attention, bargain hunters: make sure to add Bids & Dibs to your must-visit list! As Kansas’ largest resale boutique, it offers an ever-changing array of unique finds that are sure to delight thrift shoppers of all kinds.
Be The Light – Embark on a journey through décor and unique home furnishings with character. As one of the newer boutiques in Fort Scott’s historic downtown, it’s a wonderland of enchanting and festive offerings for all occasions and seasons.
Laree + Co – This was my favorite shop. I loved the whimsical offerings of Laree + Co, a charming baby and children’s store with a heartwarming mission. With a portion of its profits dedicated to the Lillian Rose Foundation, this boutique not only offers adorable finds but also supports a worthy cause.
Fort Scott, Kansas, has truly earned its place on every Midwest traveler’s bucket list. With its captivating blend of rich history, dynamic arts scene, and culinary treasures, this quaint city exceeds all expectations, leaving an enduring impression as a charming destination ripe for exploration.
